Peter was born and raised at Boort, in northern Victoria and was the seventh President of the VFGA/VFF.

In 1974, he assumed control of his family farm and went on to purchase his own property that is a thriving irrigated horticulture and cropping enterprise, producing tomatoes, cereals, oilseeds and legumes.

Peter became involved with the Victorian Farmers Federation in the mid 1980s as a negotiator for the tomato industry, and rose through its ranks until his eventual appointment as President in 1998.

Retiring from the Presidency in 2002, Peter was elected the State Member of Parliament for Swan Hill at the November 2002 State Election for the National Party.
