The United Dairyfarmers of Victoria, the dairy commodity of the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF), has welcomed this week’s announcement by Murray Goulburn Co-Operative to increase its 2009/10 farmgate milk price. UDV President Chris Griffin said the price increase followed a step up from a number of other dairy companies and was a sign of confidence in a strong future for the Victorian dairy industry. “It is fantastic to see another Victorian dairy company move towards lifting its milk price. Victorian dairy farmers can breathe a little easier for the time being, with a number of Victorian dairy companies increasing their milk price over recent months,” Mr Griffin said. “The UDV and the VFF lobbied hard on the milk price issue throughout 2009, working with the Victorian Government to secure support for the industry when they needed it the most. In turn we were very pleased that the government came to the party with some assistance for farmers who were seriously affected by the drop in price. “The step up in milk price across a number of companies will assist Victorian dairy farmers in making 2010 a more successful year than last. Many farmers are already seeing real financial improvements, with input costs decreasing considerably. “The $3 billion Victorian dairy industry is one of the biggest contributors to the state’s economy and Victoria’s largest export earner, with our quality produce providing around 13 percent of dairy products traded globally. “Victorian dairy farmers can only maintain this high level of production with the ongoing support of the companies they supply. Without a fair and equitable farmgate milk price Victoria’s dairy farms, and their rural communities, would not survive. “With milk prices as a whole on an upward curve, Victorian dairy farmers have much to feel hopeful about this year. We look forward to working with industry and government to ensure their continued support for all Victorian dairy farmers into the future,” Mr Griffin concluded.
