With Valentine’s Day to fall on a Sunday this year, hopeless romantics are being urged to arrange their flower deliveries for this coming Friday 12 February to ensure their loved ones don’t miss out. Geoff Maguire, President of Flowers Victoria suggests sending a floral gift to those at the office on Friday so that cupid’s special message still reaches that special person in time for Valentine’s Day. “Sales of all fresh flowers double on Valentine’s Day, with about 55 million roses worldwide - mostly red - being given on this one day alone,” said Mr Maguire. “However as we saw last year with Valentine’s Day falling over the weekend, many lovers missed out on being spoilt with roses as they were not in the office to receive them. This year we are encouraging both men and women to get in early and send their special someone a floral arrangement on Friday to avoid disappointment. “Around 90 percent of Australia’s flowers are bought by men – unlike the rest of the year when it is women buying the flowers. Yet only five percent of Valentine’s Day flowers are bought for men, with this figure growing over recent years as more and more men are beginning to appreciate the joy that fresh cut flowers can bring. “Red roses vary enormously. Some have stems of 40cm with tiny flowers smaller than eggs; others have stems up to 120cm long with flower heads the size of small cabbages. There are over 50 varieties, too; with shiny or matt petals; coloured deep red, orange-red, cherry-red, or almost black; and many are fragrant. “Men should not be embarrassed buying or carrying flowers. Flowers & Plants Association (UK) research shows that women are impressed by men with flowers, as they are seen as caring, sensitive and generous. “Valentine’s Day flower givers will find that by sending flowers on Friday their loved ones will enjoy the benefits of a Valentine’s Day all weekend long,” concluded Mr Maguire.
