Mrs Mitchell is credited for being one of the founders of the Landcare program, where under her Presidency, the VFF and Victorian Government entered into a partnership to establish this natural resource management initiative.

Professionally a nurse and a former partner in a pharmacy in Hopetoun, Mrs Mitchell was also an announcer for ABC Radio.
