Have your say: Firearm reforms

In the wake of the tragic Bondi attack, the Victorian Government has announced a review into Victoria’s firearms laws.

The VFF has met with the review team to understand and potential impacts to our industry and avoid any unintended consequences of these changes.

Our view is the current firearms laws are sufficient. However, we do support the establishment of a national firearms registry, the introduction of citizenship and permanent residency requirements for permits, and the implementation of an ongoing buy-back or amnesty scheme to allow primary producers to dispose of surplus firearms.

We do not support caps on firearm numbers and further limitations of essential accessories such as thermal/night scopes or ammunition or ammunition components. Firearms are essential tools of trade for primary producers, and blunt numerical limits would have significant animal welfare implications.

These views will form the backbone of a submission we are currently working on.

In addition to this, we are asking those interested to provide feedback directly through Rapid review of Victoria’s firearms laws | Engage Victoria by February 3, 2026

It’s so important that you have your say to help guide a balanced and fair outcome to these proposed reforms.
