We want to update you all as the recovery efforts continue around the clock to help those impacted by these devastating bushfires.
In addition to getting fodder into these bushfire zones, we’ve been working behind the scenes with the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments to secure more sorely needed support.
We’re glad to say today a joint recovery package of close to $100 million for communities affected by the current bushfires has been announced.
We want to ensure you’re aware of the new support measures most relevant to our members, as well as the support the VFF is continuing to provide, including immediate payments of $1,000 available today from our Disaster Relief Fund.
Primary Producer Recovery Grants
An initial $40 million has been allocated for grants of up to $75,000 to eligible primary producers. These funds can be used for clean-up costs, disposing of livestock, rebuilding or replacing damaged on-farm infrastructure, and restoring operations.
These are available via Rural Finance and will soon be available via ruralfinance.com.au or 1800 260 425.
Concessional Loans
A further $10 million in concessional loans will be available through Rural Finance. Producers who have suffered significant asset damage can access loans of up to $250,000, while those experiencing major income loss can apply for up to $100,000. These can cover equipment repair or replacement, infrastructure rebuilding, livestock purchases, and working capital expenses including wages, rent and fodder.
For information, go to ruralfinance.com.au or call 1800 260 425.
Financial Counselling
The announcement includes more than $4 million for financial counselling services, including additional funding for the VFF’s Financial Capability Support Program. Specialist counsellors can help you access recovery grants, navigate insurance claims, manage debts and connect with legal support.
You can call the Rural Financial Counselling Service on 1300 771 741.
Power Outage Payments
Households without power for seven or more days within a two-week period can receive $2,380 per week for up to three weeks. Applications are made through your electricity distributor.
Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment
Eligible individuals in declared areas can receive a one-off payment of $1,000 per adult and $400 per child. Claims can be made online through myGov.

We’ll continue to keep you updated as applications for these new programs open and further support options become available.
Finally, during times like the present it’s so incredibly important to look out for each other.
Today with Rural Assistance Commissioner and former VFF President Peter Tuohy, VFF President Brett Hosking has been out visiting those impacted in the Longwood region. They were blown away by the levels of generosity out there, but it’s truly humbling to see what these communities have lost.
It’s so easy to become overwhelmed. Don’t forget there is support out there. On the VFF website, we’ve listed some of the mental health support services available and we urge you or anyone you know to use them if needed.
Keep safe and we can’t stress enough, if you need help to contact us here at the VFF on 1300 882 833.
