National Livestock Identification System (NLIS)

The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) is Australia’s system for the identification and traceability of cattle, sheep and goats. NLIS is important for Australia’s biosecurity and food safety and provides a competitive advantage in global markets. NLIS combines 3 elements for lifetime traceability of livestock: a visual or electronic ear tag for all animals moving off their property of birth, physical location by means of a PIC, all livestock locations and movements are then recorded in the online NLIS database. These 3 elements are the minimum NLIS standards which are legislated across all states.
